0Despite me briefly mentioning trains (living right next to a pair of active rail-road tracks makes for an annoying recording environment, you just have to cross your fingers and hope that no trains come along during a recording you're trying to add commentary to) on review they're barely hearable in the video, good for me.
Anyway, if you've gone down this far in the description, perhaps you're interested in what I was getting at about character stories? Simply put, in Age of Demons and Kiwami, I feel the developers made cool and interesting characters to serve as your party members... but then gave them cliche, lazily written personal stories. A lot of the stories are given to you very abruptly and solved just as quickly, and it didn't let me have a real chance to feel for any of these characters.
Except for Hatsuho, the girl who acted like she was older then everyone else. Her story was done well (or at least, better then the other character stories). But here in Toukiden 2, while the writing for Tsubaki's personal story up to the Mitama sharing wasn't anything special, it at least felt a bit better then the character stories of past Toukiden games.
See, there's a writing technique called 'show, don't tell'. Actions speak louder then words, and actually showing us Tsubaki's loved one prior to his death is better then the loved one's death being handled entirely off-camera, as it was with, say, Nagi's sub-plot in Age of Demons.
