I found this to be very unclear as to what to do and how to do it without using the guide. Even the guide doesn't make it too clear. In any case, Tower Defense games are probably one of the genres I don't normally play much of due to not having enough to really engross me. I think the RPG elements are a nice touch, but the rewards at the end of each round are so minimal that it can be very difficult to really make a winning team.
