first off, the song is Panorama by Hirofumi Asamoto. please play beatmania IIDX 3rd style.

now, how did i go about doing this?
my main partners in crime to achieve this were ArrowVortex and StepMania Player.

ArrowVortex is something most SM/ITG charters should remember -- it's a tool made for charting notes to the .sm format (or .ssc). this is how i laid out the 'chart' for the song. i used a doubles chart as the baseline, since there's 8 sets of drumkit stuff: the hi-hat, the snare, the cymbals, the toms, and the bass kick.
lane 1 (P1 left) was the hi hat, lane 2 (P1 down) was the snare, lane 3 (P1 up) was the crash cymbal, lane 4 (P1 right) was the high tom, lane 5 (P2 left) was the bass kick, lane 6 (P2 down) was the medium tom, lane 7 (P1 up) was the...ride cymbal, i believe? and lane 8 was the low tom.
i simply charted out the song like this, and then saved it to a .sm.

i guess as an extra aside, Notepad++ was also used to change the text format from Unix (LF) to Windows (CR LF). StepMania Player doesn't like reading the former and crashes.

lastly, StepMania Player. this is what i used to actually play the chart onto Tower Unite. while it's mainly for emulating lights on a parallel port, it also has keystroke emulation, which i used to hit the notes. i basically just assigned the corresponding lanes to the keys corresponding to each part of the drum kit.
there's also a key for the beat, i just assigned it to = so it didn't do anything.
i also changed settings in the Detailed Config to lower the 'Light 'on' duration' by a bunch. Tap mS (milliseconds) was set to 35, and beat/strobe was lowered to 3 mS.
after that, it was a simple matter of enabling Remote control (to be able to start the chart outside of Tower Unite), loading up the song and playing it just at the right moment! timing it is a bit tricky, since there's a bit of latency and you can't just press 5 (the key to start) exactly on the beat. but once you get it right, it works!

it's a really silly effort just to have synced drums, but i was bored and this coronavirus shit got me needing stuff to do.
