Toxic Accountability
I recently came up with this term to describe something I've observed both in myself, in others, and in my students. I wanted to spend some time introducing this topic so that we can talk more in-depth on this topic in the future.
What is Toxic Accountability
Toxic Accountability" is having a level of personal (or external) accountability that is detrimental to oneself or those around you.
What can Toxic Accountability look like?
Verbally Berating oneself for not doing good enough, or learning a lesson
Physically hitting oneself for a similar reason
Giving up on something you love because you're not "good enough"
How do we overcome Toxic Accountability?
Set CLEAR and REALISTIC expectations of oneself
Winning a match or getting a certain rank isn't a real goal.
Set goals that will help you improve as a player.
Specify areas to improvement
Neutral
execution/mechanics
Strategy
Visual and/or mental focus
Vigilance
Hit-confirming
Set clear boundaries for Self-care
No insulting yourself
Only focus on issues and mistakes if you plan to do something about them.
Compliment yourself when you do things right
People often neglect this VERY IMPORTANT part of improving
