Trains at: Nuremburg Hauptbahnhof, 11/12/23
89A very enjoyable morning spent at the incredible station of Nuremberg (Nürnberg) in German state of Bavaria where you'll see plenty of services from Deutsche Bahn.
The Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof has been present at this very site since the 1840s when the Ludwig South-North Railway was operating from Lindau to HOF.
A lot of the larger stations around Germany at the time were all built as terminus stations, however it wasn't overly long until work started to take place at the station to make it larger and more accommodating for the various lines that were getting opened up by the state operator. It started in 1849 and ended in 1871.
After the second world war the station was closed and subsequent rebuilt over the course of 9 years because of heavy damaged sustained by allied bombing of the city. The reconstruction of the station building took place from 1945 up to 1956. Funding was in relatively short supply throughout the country so when the station was getting redesigned it was done to a much simpler manner than its predecessor.
The station also plays host to the cities S-Bahn system, it's fairly young in the sense that the work started taking place to construct the network in 1988, the S-Bahn has it's own platforms at the northeast part of the station.
When the eastern section of the track was being laid out and tinkered with it costs around 100 Million Deutsche Mark's which was part funded by the Government, The state of Bavaria and the city of Nuremberg. This included 16 kilometres of track and 60 points covering an area of 156,000 square metres getting relaid.
Throughout the rest of the 20th century additional work was done to modernise the station.
