A couple years ago, I uploaded a full playthrough of Penny Racers: A delightful racing simulator, one that took many cues from Gran Turismo, but made the experience work for a younger audience. I appreciated its ability to be accessible while gently introducing complicated RPG elements and intuitive car controls into a deceptively cute looking budget game.

Transformers: Battlegrounds follows the same approach as Penny Racers, only swapping out the Gran Turismo inspired racing for slow and methodical turn-based strategy, akin to the X-Com series of games. Transformers: Battlegrounds is thought-provoking, often making you consider who to bring on missions, what abilities to stack, and what approaches to take with each level. The difficulty never feels steep enough to be completely impossible to play on a lower level but it encourages experimentation as you push through endless Decepitcon foes and environmental hazards.

Because of this, I ultimately found myself enjoying the game a whole lot more than I ever expected to. Tonally, while Battlegrounds matches the vibe of Transformers: Cyberverse, the show of which this is coinciding with, it appears a touch simple in its presentation and visuals. That said, the look of Transformers: Battlegrounds has charm in a way that well marketed, AAA, releases never would.

If anything else lets Outright Games' release down, it would be the occassional game breaking bug or odd audio glitch, both of which betray the quality of Battlegrounds gameplay by comparison. It has a respectablely long campaign, at roughly 15-20 hours long, and even supplementive DLC that enhances the experience further. There are, curiously, multiplayer options that involve game modes like Capture the Flag and Wave Defence in Last Stand, both of which can be played locally and add more longevity to the experience in all.

So, I ask you, should you throw away your life so recklessly by missing out on Transformers: Battlegrounds?

Well, that's a question you should ask yourself Megatron.
