On August 1, 2016, the first installment of KoukouStudios' Lethe series was released, published by Faber Interactive. Including "Episode One" in the title made many gamers think the experience would be released in installments, much like a TellTale or Dontnod title. However, it is considered to be a complete, stand-alone story, with no additional installments needed to play the full game.
Trivia: Lethe is Greek for "forgetfulness": in Greek mythology, the Lethe is one of the rivers that flow through Hades, also called the River of Oblivion. The shades of the dead had to drink from this river to forget about their past lives on earth. The tie-in with someone unknowing of their own past is fairly clear.
Controls are standard: W, A, S, and D for movement; Spacebar for jump; C to crouch (hold to maintain); Left Ctrl to crouch (tap to toggle rather than holding); E to interact; Left Shift to sprint; Q to drink a health potion; and R to drink an energy potion. Once you have acquired such abilities: LMB is telekinesis push and RMB is telekinesis pull.
Crushed under the debts of his recently deceased step-father, a journalist with an unremarkable career named Robert Dawn decides to hunt down his origins. Everything points to a quiet mining settlement. Shortly after his arrival, Robert comes into contact with an unknown substance and develops psychokinetic abilities that feed on his life energy. As tension rises, he is faced with another, even darker threat, quickly turning the trip into a terrifying battle for survival.
What is the dark past Robert will uncover? What lurks within the abandoned mine? Why is there no one in the mining village anymore? Let's play Lethe: Episode One and find out.
