The end of the latest British tour of Afghanistan has been marked as troops deployed on Op Herrick 17 return home and personnel serving on Herrick 18 begin their duties in the country.
In a short ceremony in Lashkar Gah, Brigadier Bob Bruce, of 4th Mechanized Brigade, handed command of Task Force Helmand to Brigadier Rupert Jones, of 1 Mechanized Brigade.
By the end of this year, the British presence in Afghanistan will have halved to 5,200.
Prominent figures from across the province gathered at the base to express their optimism that progress was being made as coalition forces prepare to cease combat operations by the end of next year.
