Every new game is a new world with its own rules and conditions, and every new player is an explorer. As a developer or a publisher you can either make this world an exciting and welcoming place to visit and settle in, or a confusing and overly convoluted mess that will bore or scare away all its newcomers. How do you make the player understand the basics of your game without overwhelming him with too much information? Why is it that nearly no one likes tutorials and avoids reading the help texts? What are the ways to make the player feel comfortable in your game while providing all the necessary facts and rules? In this presentation I will cover these questions and more, while discussing “do's and don'ts” of guiding the player throughout the game.
