Here I have posted a video to compare two different picture presets a modern TV set (the set used in this video is a Panasonic TH-42PX600U, 8 years old).

As you will see for the first part of the video, the picture preset mode is on Dynamic. This preset basically maximises image brightness, adds extra sharpness and colour, enhances the colours and uses a 'Cool' colour temperature which pushes extra blue into the picture. This picture preset is mainly functional in bright store rooms to attract the viewers attention and it may sound like it improves the picture, however it doesn't. This preset basically makes the image look washed out, colors bleed into one and another and distorts the image, so this is best avoided!

The Normal preset (use Cinema/True Cinema/THX Cinema/Movie/User on newer TV's, if available) on the other hand, has a slightly less bright image, the colour setting is lower, there are no color enhancements and it uses a 'Warm' colour temperature which gives a more natural image. On this TV, I calibrated it using Disney WoW Blu-Ray for all the other controls, and also set Colour and Tint with the blue filter glasses included. Even though this might not make the image pop as much as Dynamic, it gives a much more realistic image and the overall picture quality is much better! So this preset is a better choice overall than Dynamic.

Think about it. Is grass a laser green colour in real life? Is peoples faces bright orange and pale in real life? Are movies that are set in old times supposed to look like cartoons? Answer it yourelf!
