Although I broke it again I have found a way round the input of the code. Its unusual and feels a little cheaty, but from now on I will be using save states as that keeps the code in place.
And a Save-Scum is a tactic used in Randomizers when you have to travel a long distance for a check. I saved the game in Kakariko village and went back to Ordon Ranch but the check there was nothing useful so I reset the game so that I didn't have to take time to travel back, thus saves time.
