I get some argument of mob rule. That two party establishment can be a way to avoid influence of direct democracy like Europe has, which is the fear of one party rule of influence. But then why not have multiparty system within these two establishments (as in left vs right parties in both Democrats and Republican system? then if either left or right gets most votes, then they can form a coalition government and be voted for Presidential candidate in the end run) That way you can avoid mob rule but also get to vote for someone you actually like.

To sum it up, have some CEO Boss of influence in Democratic and Republican establishment, or depending how many establishments you wish to have (to avoid mob rule)
But also allow Democracy within these establishments, then add final vote for the establishment you want to run the country in the Presidential election.
