Ubuntu Touch OTA-7: Security Fixes & More!
In This Video We Are Looking At Ubuntu Touch OTA-7 Update Released with Key Security Fixes
A new update for Ubuntu Touch, OTA-7, is now rolling out to all supported devices through the Stable channel. This release brings essential security improvements and several other updates for users of this mobile operating system, which is based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa).
This quick update follows closely on the heels of OTA-6, which was released just three weeks ago. The rapid turnaround addresses two critical security vulnerabilities in the PulseAudio audio server, ensuring enhanced privacy and stability for users.
Key Security Fixes in OTA-7
Trust Store Permission Issue: A flaw was identified that allowed certain apps to bypass the Trust Store permission system in PulseAudio. This could potentially grant unauthorized access to the microphone and other sensitive system functions.
Bluetooth Volume Crash: Another vulnerability allowed certain applications to crash the PulseAudio server when adjusting the volume on specific virtual devices while using a Bluetooth headset.
The UBports team has worked closely with Canonical to coordinate this release and mitigate these issues. While the vulnerabilities were specific to Ubuntu Touch’s PulseAudio patches, the second issue could also affect some Ubuntu 16.04 systems with non-standard configurations.
Devices Receiving the OTA-7 Update
The update is rolling out to a wide range of devices, including:
Asus: Zenfone Max Pro M1
Fairphone: 3, 3+, and 4
Google: Pixel 3a and 3a XL
OnePlus: 5, 5T, 6, 6T, Nord N10 5G, and Nord N100
Sony: Xperia X
Xiaomi: Poco X3 NFC/X3
Others: F(x)tec Pro1 X, JingPad A1, Vollaphone series
Existing users on the Stable channel can upgrade via the "Updates" section in the System Settings app. The update is being rolled out gradually, so it may take a few days for all devices to receive it.
