This is it, folks: we finally reach the frozen northern regions of the Serpent Isle!
First, though, we have to resolve the matter of Cantra's disappearance: the Wooden Sword in my cache at Moonshade turns out to be the right one, and after returning to the mainland, we're able to get the Hound of Doskar to lead us to Shamino's Castle in the northeast, which is where I would've guessed Cantra was based on the crystal ball image in her mother's home!
Making our way in, we have a confrontation with Batlin that dispels any notion that we're going to get a morally complex "teaming with the Guardian's former general against the Guardian" situation: Batlin has just decided that he wants to be the all-powerful world conqueror instead of playing second fiddle! Oh, and he's MURDERED Cantra to release a demon that was bound within her, as part of a plot to have demons destroy the world? Is the forthcoming plot-extender here going to be a Final Fantasy VI-esque "villain wins halfway through" deal?!
Well, perhaps we'll find out soon enough, because once we report Cantra's death to her mother, we receive a prophecy that makes it clear that the time has come to go to the north, and so north we go! It's awfully cold and I didn't do much to prepare, but we're eventually able to scavenge enough winter wear to protect everyone but the Avatar from frostbite, and the Avatar's Ring of Regeneration heals him at the same speed that frostbite kills him, so... good enough.
In the north, we meet the Gwani people, who let us know that GWENNO IS DEAD, a piece of news that Iolo has no apparent reaction to. They also ask us for help saving their leader's daughter from an unknown illness, sending us on a trip to harvest Ice Dragon blood! Returning with the blood, we save the day and receive a clue to help us access the inner sanctum of Skullcrusher Mountain, which may just be where Batlin is.
Is the big event that I'd assume to be the climax of the game if I didn't know by reputation that I've got a long way to go finally at hand? We'll have to find out next time!
