Game Gear Double Dragon, Knuckle Bash, and Metamorphic Force (Greg and James Beat 'Em Up! Ep. 73)
00:00 Beginning (Theme Song by James!)
06:47 Double Dragon (Game Gear; 1993; Virgin Interactive)
49:40 Knuckle Bash (Arcade; 1993; Data East)
1:19:50 Metamorphic Force (Arcade; 1993; Konami)
There's a bit of cleanup still to do on 1992, but for now, we're on to 1993 in full force!
This week, we encounter yet another port of Double Dragon, for Sega's Game Gear. To our surprise, this "port" by Virgin Interactive is more like an entirely original game! It's not *great*, or anything, but you have to appreciate the effort involved, and it's certainly at least a bit fun. *VERDICT*: Mid Tier!
Then, it's back to the arcades with Data East's Knuckle Bash, a 1993 brawler set in a world where everyone's a pro wrestler! It's a surprisingly charming game with a focus on smaller-scale fights against tougher opponents. We have a really good time with it! *VERDICT*: Mid-Boss Tier!
Then, we have Konami, back with an original IP that feels like it should be licensed from a fully fleshed out animated series with a proper toy line. This is a colourful, bombastic game about warriors who can turn into anthropomorphic animals, fighting to put an ancient evil back to its eternal rest! Konami, it turns out, knows its way around a beat 'em up! *VERDICT*: Mid-Boss Tier!
Next week, we keep it coming with the arcade beat 'em ups of 1993 while also taking a leap back to the early days of the genre for one we missed: 1988's Ninja Gaiden (Arcade)!
