We can’t conceptualize something new. The future is suspended in time and is gradually being cancelled. This has a tangible material basis: since art must be profitable under our economic dogma, it cannot be subversive or disruptive. Through this commodified mode of art production, the “new” consists of a risk-minimized regurgitation of the historical past relying on soulless nostalgia: our contemporary opium.
But this is not only true for art. A future where crafts, policies & technology are free from market functions is being ground up into dust. What is left of this caustic erosion is a haunting & taunting spectre of aborted futures: things like socialism, emancipatory technology, dignified work, and an ecologically healthy planet. The hope for a better world has been gutted by inaction, passivity, and retreat into obscure prose.
We should attempt to reject simple ways out of this cryostatic nightmare: nihilism, infighting, bickering, doomerism, faux-rebellion or suicide. Through nercromantic rituals we shall summon the red spectre and embrace it. We shall capture it and harness its power to reclaim our revolutions.
