He was the madman who redefined heavy metal… an unlikely rock hero who became a legend. With the passing of Ozzy Osbourne on July 22, 2025, the world lost more than the “Prince of Darkness”—we lost one of music’s most passionate, misunderstood, and enduring voices. Today, we’re celebrating Ozzy the only way that feels right—by taking a deep dive through the songs that shaped his legacy. Because behind the bat-biting headlines was a man of depth, kindness, and resilience. Let’s tell Ozzy’s story the way it was meant to be told… through the music that changed everything, including Paranoid, the 3-minute filler Song that made rock and Roll Dangerous and the light behind the Prince of Darkness, NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

It’s the end of an era. Ozzy Osbourne—the metal pioneer, the beloved madman—passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 76. His family shared the devastating news in a heartfelt statement: “With more sadness than words can express, we announce that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne passed away this morning, surrounded by family and love. We kindly ask for privacy during this difficult time.” Since then, tributes have flooded in from fans, friends, musicians, and his Black Sabbath bandmates.
Today on the channel, we’re paying tribute Ozzy Osbourne the best way we know how—through his music. I was thinking about doing an Evolution episode to celebrate his incredible career… but the usual 5 songs just didn’t seem like enough. So, we’re doing something special: an Evolution episode with a twist, featuring seven essential tracks from his Black Sabbath days and solo career. I’m calling it the Heavenly Seven. But there’s more. We all know Ozzy as the Prince of Darkness. And we’ve heard all the wild stories, the controversies, and about the chaos that has followed him throughout his career. Those stories are well-worn. But today, I want to shine a light on a different side of Ozzy. I want to speak to his qualities of kindness, resilience, and heart… that defined him just as much.
Let’s get started with the album that introduced the world to Ozzy Osbourne: Black Sabbath’s 1970 self-titled debut. And believe it or not, it was recorded in a single day. Of course, critics hated it. They wrote the band off… But Ozzy didn’t care. He once said, “We were poor, we were loud, and we didn’t know what we were doing. But people listened.” And honestly, that’s what mattered. People listened because the band’s raw energy and Ozzy’s unpolished vocals spoke to young fans who wanted something real. Sabbath was scary to some, but thrilling to others. And here’s my first pick… Album 1, track 1. The very beginning. The band’s namesake song: Black Sabbath.
When listeners dropped the needle on that opening track, it was like a dark revelation. That thunderclap, the tolling church bell, and that crawling tritone riff creeping out of the speakers… It was like an ill-fated omen. It was chilling. It sounded like the end of the world. And then Ozzy coming in with that spine-tingling line: “What is this that stands before me?” With that one question, heavy metal was born. It was a horror film
