It was the year of golden oldies. In fact, it was the year that was described when people say the oldies but goodies. So many incredible songs, including the rise of the instrumental track Telstar by The Tornados that would spark the British Invasion, and it was recorded in a kitchen, along with a one-hit wonder, Monster Mash, that we play every single year for a month. Plus, The Twist, a song that hit #1 twice by the same artist (Chubby Checker) 2 years apart… It’s an artist I tried to get an interview with, and was told it would cost six figures! And there was Can't Help Falling in Love, the song from 1784 that was written from a woman’s perspective that Elvis Presley took to #1 centuries later. And then there's Loco-motion, the song that was written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin that they had their babysitter Eva Boyd record a scratch vocal to just to show it to the star, they really wanted to sing it. When she rejected it, they released it as is, and it became a #1 hit four different times. Great guests, and a host of other timeless classics & are NEXT on Professor of Rock!

One of my favorite sayings from the late, brilliant Brian Wilson was when he told me that music is “God talking to us.” Whether you’re a religious person or not, I thought that was a fantastic thought. There is something divine about the way music speaks to us, especially the gift of the so-called ‘Golden Oldie,’ a classic song from way back in the day that’s so catchy and timeless, it still makes you want to sing along and dance—even decades later. It’s the kind of tune that’s stood the test of time, bringing nostalgia and good vibes whenever or wherever it plays. 1962 was full of great songs that can be crowned as “golden oldies.” Many that we still sing today, and some great guests today. So give it a chance.

We’re going to kick off our countdown of the Top 10 Songs of ’62 with a trailblazing instrumental. At #10…it’s “Telstar” by The Tornados: During the early 1960s, humanity was captivated by space exploration—the launch of satellites, astronauts orbiting Earth, and the looming promise of moon landings. Testar sounded like this… It sounded like the future! and it was, it made the Tornados the first british band to top the US CHARTS, beating the Beatles by over a year. It was inspired by a Real Satellite Launched That Same Year … Telstar, the first active communication satellite, which launched in July 1962. The writer and producer behind it was an early pop genius named Joe Meek, who would later go mad, more on that in a second…

Meeks was a sonic pioneer and he recorded this song in his apartment… his flat… Not a studio.. he created it in his kitchen actually, and he used homemade electronics and was one of the first to use tape loops and an early version of the synthesizer before anybody knew what that was! The weird wound was a Clavioline… An early synth.. He used this to mimic the space sounds.. This song was massive.. It sold 5 million copies worldwide making it one of the biggest song of the 60s.. Sadly Joe Meek Didn’t get a songwriting credit or even royalties because of a plagiarism lawsuit that he eventually won. Thought posthumously: Joe Meek was affected by schizophrenia. He has sunk into debt and depression...
