Nate reunites with Elena and is introduced to German explorer, Carl Schaeffer (René Auberjonois). Schaeffer sends him and Tenzin after the remains of Schaeffer's failed expedition to the Chintamani Stone decades earlier. Nate and Tenzin travel through ice caves and fight strange monsters. They discover that Schaefer was working for the Nazi Ahnenerbe and that he killed his people to save the world from the stone. They return to thwart an attack on the village by Lazarević, who kidnaps Schaefer and steals Phurba. Elena and Nate follow Lazarević's convoy to a monastery, where a mortally wounded Schaefer warns Nate to destroy the stone before Lazarević obtains its power.
After retrieving Phurba from Chloe, Nate and Elena open the secret passageway to Shambhala beneath the monastery, but Lazarević ambushes them. After Chloe's cover is blown, Lazarević forces Nate to open the way to Shambhala. The demons attack but are killed by Lazarević, who reveals them to be the human-like guardians of Shambhala. After the gate opens, the undead Guardians attack, allowing Nate, Elena and Chloe to escape.
In the city, the group discovers that the Chintamani stone is a giant amber, obtained from the sap of an ancient tree of life, along with flammable resin. Explaining to the Guardians and Polo's doomed crew, the juice gives the drinker inhuman powers. Flynn, left for dead by Lazarević, ambushes them and launches a suicide attack, seriously injuring Elena. Nate leaves her in Chloe's care and confronts Lazarević at the tree. Lazarević drinks the sap of the tree, becoming almost invincible. By shooting explosive pockets of resin, Nate defeats Lazarević and leaves him to be killed by the Guardians. As the city collapses under collapsing trees and exploded tar, Nate and Chloe carry Elena to safety.
At the village, Chloe advises Nate to tell Elena that he loves her before he says goodbye. Sully leaves a recovering Elena with Nate. The couple pay their respects at the memorial to Schaefer and Kiss.
