Developers from Naughty Dog have revealed behind-the-scenes details from one of the Uncharted series' best chase encounters, seen in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. Despite the popular action-adventure franchise being quiet for some time, 2022 is set to be a good year for fans, with not only the upcoming movie starring Tom Holland as Nathan Drake, but also the PS5 and PC release of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves.
Uncharted 4 marked the end of Drake's journey when it released in 2016, though the franchise would continue in 2017's standalone release, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, starring Chloe Frazer. A Thief's End was the first in the series to launch on PS4, and utilized the console's power and features with typical Naughty Dog cinematic flair. One of the most memorable scenes for many is the Madagascar chase, which sees Drake utilize vehicles and weapons in a multi-part escape scene to reunite with his brother, Sam. Recognized as being a series highlight, the sequence is set to impress new players when Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves comes to PC in 2022.
Part of the reason why the scene remains a highlight of Uncharted 4's gameplay is thanks to its depth. The scene starts with Drake and Sully driving through the streets as they attempt to escape their Shoreline pursuers, with the player required to crash through walls and divert through side-streets as the action ramps up. The sequence is followed by a convey pursuit, where players must jump from vehicle to vehicle to reach the head of the convey, taking down enemies in their path, before an impressive rope-swinging scene ending with Nate being dragged through the mud. The sequence closes after finally being reunited with Sam for even more combat. The whole chase is packed with non-stop action, and wouldn't look out of place in a movie.
"The entire chase sequence there is about that turmoil. I see it as part of the turmoil, and that's kind of what dictates how much odds we want to put in front of Nate, how many obstacles we want to put in front of him. That's symbolic of that turbulence inside, and that's how we fused the gameplay with narrative. We were looking for opportunities to say 'What's the worst thing that could happen to our character?'"
