The term "Pay2Earn" was coined by Sam Machkovech in his excellent, highly critical, Ars Technica article on Forza Motorsport 7 where due to it only being possible to gain extra "CR" (i.e. extra race winnings), through a use of an in-game "Mod", and those only being available as a random reward that may be found within its Loot Boxes (which are currently only purchasable with CR, but which will be possible to buy with "Car Tokens"that are bought in bundles with real money in the future), then as he puts it:
"The loot box system encourages players to dump their stacks of CR into the loot box economy in order to earn more CR. Spend CR to make CR! ...this reminds me of slot machines, which randomly dole out bonuses and percentage boosts at just the right time to give players little endorphin rushes right before they might otherwise quit. Either way, this kind of play effectively takes you out of the driver's seat—or even the pit—to become a bean counter."
