Vishnu is also known as Tri-Vikrama or the Triple Strider. This name for Vishnu comes from the famous three steps of Vishnu, a concept mentioned in Vishnu Sukta in the Rigveda. The hymn says that the first and second steps of Vishnu’s strides encompass earth and air and the third step is heaven which is Vaikunth or Vishnu’s abode. We also know about the three steps of Vishnu as the famous legend from the Bhagvata Purana where Vishnu’s dwarf avatar, Vamana, brings back the Triloka (three worlds) from Asura Bali with his three steps and gives it to Indra.
Rigveda’s verse 3.56.2 describes the three spaces: Continuously moving, very wide three are positioned one on top of another. Two of them are hidden and only one is seen.
Let’s understand this in the context of the universe. The Rigveda says that the universe is divided into 3 lokas or 3 spaces:
1. Prithvi: Observable space in the universe (not to be confused with Earth)
2. Vayu or Antariksha: Intermediary field between Prithvi and Dyau (not to be confused with air)
3. Dyau: Light space in the universe (not to be confused with spaces where there is light)
Prithvi is called observable space because it is the space where electromagnetic force causes the expansion of the universe. That is the space of the universe where particles are being created and destroyed. Our rishis referred to particles as ‘Janah’ and therefore, Prithvi is also called ‘Martyalok’ because in this space ‘janah’ or particles take birth and die. This space has our stars, planets, galaxies… everything observable. This space is Vishnu’s first step.
Vayu or Antariksha space is the field energy that divides Prithvi and Dyau. This is a field that surrounds electric charge. This space has yet not been discovered by modern science. But the Rigveda mentions this space as the second step of Vishnu.
Yajurveda 32.10 states: In the third abode immortal gods live.
Dyau is light space or heaven. It is called so because in this space, energy constantly exists. In this space particles are not being created or destroyed. Energy exists. Since there is no matter or anti-matter being created or destroyed, Dyau became known as the space of immortality or the abode of gods. In the context of science, this space could be the space of dark matter, a subject on which immense research is being done. Science yet hasn’t discovered this space too, but evidently, our rishis had the power to observe the magnitude of the universe .
These spaces have no boundaries of demarcation. It is like an intertwined web. It can exist between the sun and the planets or between you and me. This intertwined web of the three spaces is also called ‘mayajal’. ‘Ma’ means measured and ‘jaal’ means web. It’s a measured web or can we say, it has symmetry? Well, science says that the key to unification is symmetry and unravelling this macrocosm can lead to greater discoveries.
Our scientists are yet to find what our sages had discovered ages ago. Yes, it’s tough for our minds to comprehend such complicated concepts of the universe. Perhaps, one step at a time and some day we will!
Satapatha Brahmana 7. 1.2.23 states: These lokas were together in the beginning. Earth and heaven and then separated and the space between them became Antariksha.
