October 18th, 1941: Manstein's 11th Army is finally able to give its undivided attention to capturing the Crimea. His task is made more difficult to strip his command of all mobile units for the impending attack on Rostov. For their part, the Soviets suffer from a split command structure and an incoherent defensive strategy. Their troops are a mix of regular formations, newly raised militia with barely and training, and veterans of the fighting at Odessa.
