Feedback Effect graphics demo in Unity (PC) 3440x1440 UltraWide 21:9 resolution.

52 Weeks of Sharing:

Inspired by a photographer friend, Laura Totten, who published a photo for every day of the year 2019, I am going to share a piece of graphics programming for every week of 2020! I am using the, currently unpopular, hashtag #52weeksofsharing on YouTube and Instagram. Feel free to join.

Feedback Effect:

This effect was common in the early European demoscene in the 90's, where the texture you render is taken from the scene itself. In Unity, you perform this using render textures and an additional camera. It is the same idea as pointing a camera towards the screen that shows the camera's input. It may be possible to expand this effect into a double mirror with double cameras. An idea for the future.

YouTube Resolutions Explored:

I am exploring uploading videos in 3440x1440 60Hz, and the way YouTube handles 21:9 UltraWide resolutions can be confusing to the end user. To get 3440x1440 display output, you have to select "2160p60 (4K)" rather than "1440p60". To be clear, to get 1440p you have to select 2160p, not 1440p. How does this make sense? Check out my findings below.

YouTube 21:9 UltraWide Resolutions (Quality Settings vs. Actual Resolution):
- 2160p displays 3440x1440.
- 1440p displays 2560x1072; Note: 2560x1440 is a 16:9 widescreen resolution.
- 1080p displays 1920x804; Note: 1920x1080 is a 16:9 widescreen resolution.
- 720p displays 1280x536; Note: 1280x720 is a 16:9 widescreen resolution.
- etc.

It appears YouTube lets you choose resolutions based on height (2160p, 1440p, 1080p, 720p, etc.) but selects the output resolution based on the width of that height's 16:9 widescreen version.
