One of the ways that Unreal mixes the combat up is by having enemies that strafe side to side and use dodge rolls. It's better than Quake II's "enemies are smart because they duck rockets" because they're actually, y'know, smart and dodge certain attacks. "Smart" in quotations, of course, because while they dodge certain attacks they'll gleefully get hit by others similar to them, or projectiles that are slower than what they normally avoid.
