Until Dawn is a 2015 interactive drama horror game developed by Supermassive Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Players assume control of eight young adults who have to survive on Blackwood Mountain when their lives are threatened. The game features a butterfly effect system in which players must make choices that may change the story. All playable characters can survive or die, depending on the choices made. Players explore the environment from a third-person perspective and find clues that may help solve the mystery.
"Until Dawn" is an interactive drama where players control eight young adults trying to survive on Blackwood Mountain until dawn. The gameplay combines cutscenes and third-person exploration, where players find clues, items, and collect totems that hint at future events. An in-game system tracks story clues and secrets across playthroughs. Action sequences rely on quick time events (QTEs), including a "Don't Move" prompt that requires players to hold the controller still. The game features a butterfly effect system, with choices ranging from minor actions to significant moral decisions, some of which are timed. These choices affect the narrative, character relationships, and can lead to permanent deaths, which the game adapts to. Players cannot reload previous saves, ensuring choices are final unless they restart or begin a new game. There are hundreds of endings based on 22 critical decisions. Divided into 10 chapters, the game includes intermissions where Dr. Hill (Peter Stormare) addresses the player directly, analyzing their fears and choices.
