Here's a quick breakdown of the plan I had.

Ending levels early - It's an autoscroller, but once all of the enemies are dead, the level will end. So the faster you can complete the level, the better. You'll notice that I end most every level with the enemies pretty far up the screen. There's some manipulation to be done on 1 and 3 to get easier spawns.

Missiles rape - Build them up as quickly as possible, although upgrading the guns to 2 once you have 3 missiles and then to 3 once you have 7 missiles seems optimal. You'll notice that I forgot to upgrade to 3 when I got 7 missiles, compare wave 10 and wave 11 to see how big of a difference they make.

Upgrade the graphics - For whatever reason, different graphics have different difficulties. If you ever complete wave 20 with basic graphics, upgrade, and try it again you'll notice that you clear the enemies much faster (missiles particularly get a boost). As far as I've been able to tell the order is, from hardest to easiest, 1 2 4 3. So I upgrade to level 3 as quickly as I can so the rest of the game is easy.

Kill enemies over money - A lot of the times I failed a wave were because I'd be trying to grab money instead of keeping an eye on the approaching enemies. They move at different speeds, so instead of keeping track of money, now I try to keep track of which enemies are coming and get rid of them quickly without worrying about money. Following my upgrade path, there aren't any places where you're struggling for cash so it's not like it really matters a whole lot.
