Using Bachmann RS-3 for DCC conversion of an Atlas

The Atlas Classic RS-3s aren't DCC ready, and there's very little room to add a decoder unless you're willing to mill the frame.

I have issues with BOTH the Atlas ones I had converted to DCC -aesthetically, the shells don't sit right. Functionally the decoders installs are problematic, likely due to the lack of room for wiring.

The Atlas shell will accept the Bachmann RS-3 frame.. but of course the Bachmann isn't anywhere near as good of a loco as the Atlas is out-of-the-box.

So is it acceptable? It took me some times and tweaks to get the BMan one running well, but for a $60 solution I think it's "good enough".
