Vengeful Rites - VR Gameplay HTC Vive
Good, yes. Second coming of Vanishing Realms, maybe not so much. I do see a lot of comparisons to Vanishing Realms though and that's a double edged sword. The game will always be compared to and live in the shadow of Vanishing Realms.
So combat. The main gameplay activity. Fun, but needs some work. Parrying doesn't always work though it seems to be more of a problem in the tutorial than against real enemies. I still have some issues with the parry detection. I slowed down the tutorial fight and the animation of your master jumps from about to hit your sword, to hitting you, about 2-3 feet, in a single frame. This may be more related to that animation than the parry system in general but either way, it's not a pleasant experience to see an enemies sword travel through your own.
Enemies are not as dangerous as Vanishing Realms and I think that's what's missing. It was very hard to get a hit in on the higher tier skeletons. You had to have perfect timing, block an attack and hit the right spot. Vengeful Rites feels a bit too lose in comparison. I don't get parried or blocked at all and rarely get dodged. There's less satisfaction to combat then with Vanishing Realms and it just doesn't feel as good. It is quite a bit faster though so it's a give and take. I still think Vanishing Realms is my preference though this is still playable.
The Boss fight was fun. There was strategy. You had to be observant and use your brain. I hope future boss fights follow suit. My first fight with the giant was much more natural and I'm still kicking myself for not hitting record...
I liked the talent tree/perk system but I wish there was more information provided. In a permanent point allocation system we need more information provided up front to make accurate decisions. How many points will we have by the end of the game? What are the ultimate abilities? I have to potentially ruin a characters build to even see what the ultimate ability is. This has a lot of headroom for improvement. but I like the direction it's headed.
Right now the backpack seems pointless other than as a pick axe holder and gold counter. It feels like we should be able to put food and potions in our backpack however they just fall to the ground when it's attempted. I hope this is an Early Access bug and not intended.
Graphically, I like the the cartoony look of the game. I think it lends itself to aging better than more photorealistic graphics and when you're in headset and the whole world matches the art style, it's much easier to accept. Consistency looks better in headset than amazing.
The music and sound effects were well done. Nothing much to say here one way or the other
A decent amount of options. Locomotion options should suit most, if not all, players preferences. Several comfort options though not as many as other games. I liked the calibration system. It's slightly more in-depth than the standard T pose calibration most do but also includes chest and waist position which is nice. Graphics options were a tad lacking but the game was very performant on my system.
On it's own without comparing it to Vanishing Realms, which is pretty hard to do with the similarities... It's a decent RPG. If you buy into all the hype you may be disappointed. Go in with normal expectations and you should thoroughly enjoy yourself. I will likely be streaming more of this game.
