A vertical suplex is a professional wrestling technique, in which the practitioner lifts their opponent upside down from a front facelock position, before falling backwards to slam their opponent on the ground. This is not to be confused with a brainbuster, in which the opponent is dropped more vertically onto their head.
As a fundamental technique in pro wrestling, vertical suplexes are commonplace in the moves lists of wrestling games. They can also sometimes be found in fighting games, particularly in the command list of wrestler or grappler characters. Some beat 'em up characters also make use of the vertical suplex, notably Haggar in Final Fight 2.
Now let's look at each example in more detail:
★Garou: Mark of the Wolves★
This eighth installment of the Fatal Fury series by SNK marked the debut appearance of Tizoc / The Griffon / Griffon Mask, the masked wrestler. He has a vertical suplex animation which shows him turn towards his opponent upon landing.
★Tekken 3★
The masked wrestler King returned in Namco's PlayStation port of their third Tekken game. Originally, both King and his mentor Armor King had a delayed vertical suplex, during which their opponent it momentarily suspended in the inverted position. After Tekken 1, King was assigned a regular vertical suplex to differentiate him from Armor King.
★World Heroes★
ADK's 2D fighting game for arcades includes a pro wrestler character called Muscle Power, whose appearance is clearly inspired by Hulk Hogan. He can perform several wrestling throws, including a vertical suplex, powerbomb, and atomic drop.
★Project Justice: Rival Schools 2★
This is a 3D fighting game by Capcom, with a story based on rivalries between students of different high schools. One character, Edge, is a student gang member, who has a vertical suplex as his standard throw. This makes him a rare example of a non-wrestler / non-grappler character who uses this move.
★Mutant Fighter / Death Brade★
This is a monster wrestling game, along the same lines as Fighting Masters for SEGA Genesis, or the arcade game King Of The Monsters. Shankar the Minotaur can perform a vertical suplex from the grappling position. The animation shows him swaying with his opponent, to build up momentum which helps him complete the move.
★Virtua Fighter 2★
The sequel to SEGA's revolutionary fighting game helped to further pioneer realistic 3D polygon graphics. The pro wrestler character Wolf Hawkfield has a vertical suplex as his standard throw.
★WCW vs. nWo: World Tour★
This is the first in the series of N64 wrestling games produced by AKI corporation, which are fondly remembered for having excellent gameplay and intuitive controls. Many characters, including the Lucha Libre wrestler Rey Mysterio, can perform a vertical suplex to force their opponent back into the ring from the outside apron.
★Street Fighter Alpha 3★
This entry in Capcom's Street Fighter sub-series introduced the female masked wrestler R. Mika (Rainbow Mika). She is a huge fan of Zangief, the original wrestler in the Street Fighter series, and uses a vertical suplex like he does. In her case, however, she follows it up with a sexy pose.
★Power Stone★
In this 3D arena fighting game by Capcom, the Native American grappler Galuda has a vertical suplex as his standard throw. Upon successful competition of the move, the opponent flies across the floor until they collide with a wall or obstacle, which is a typical effect of being thrown in Power Stone.
★WWF Wrestlemania★
Midway, the creators of Mortal Kombat, produced an arcade wrestling game based on the professional wrestling promotion WWF (later renamed to WWE). The game uses Midway's signature style of digitised sprites. Despite it being a common wrestling move, only Lex Luger has a vertical suplex in this game. He must grapple with his opponent in order to use it.
★Fighting Layer★
This 3D fighting game by Arika has a similar gameplay style to their Street Fighter EX series. A hidden boss character, called Clemence, can be unlocked by either time release or using MAME cheats. He is a grappler with various wrestling moves including a vertical suplex.
★ECW Hardcore Revolution★
In the Game Boy Color version of this game, all of the wrestlers have the same basic moveset. I chose Justin Credible to demonstrate the vertical suplex from the tie-up position.
