This run explores Japan, explaining how to build up a market and an industrial economy essentially from scratch in the early game under conditions of total agrarian isolation. This will not necessarily be a run focused on reform. We will be making slow, measured changes in the Japanese system without losing sight of or respect for traditional methods of production and governance.
We're working on enshrining Buddhism as Japan's state religion when a surprise diplomatic play from the United States of America opens our market. Realistically, we probably could have fought them off, but it wasn't worth the cost in blood and treasure for a white peace to retain our trade isolationism so we shifted over to free trade and quickly began taking advantage of our access to foreign markets to accelerate our timetables of economic growth.
Episode Timeframe: January 1839 - June 1841
