Point and click: These are games that involve using a mouse or a cursor to interact with objects and characters on the screen, often in a puzzle-solving or adventure context. Some examples of point and click games are Monkey Island, Myst, and Broken Sword.
2D side scrolling platformers: These are games that involve moving a character from left to right (or vice versa) across a 2D environment, jumping over obstacles and enemies, and collecting items or power-ups. Some examples of 2D side scrolling platformers are Super Mario Bros, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Rayman.
Beat em ups: These are games that involve fighting multiple enemies in close combat, using fists, weapons, or special moves. Some examples of beat em ups are Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, and Final Fight.
Light gun shooters: These are games that use a gun-shaped peripheral to shoot at targets on the screen, often in a first-person perspective. Some examples of light gun shooters are Duck Hunt, Time Crisis, and House of the Dead.
Vehicular combat: These are games that involve driving or piloting vehicles that are equipped with weapons, and engaging in combat with other vehicles or enemies. Some examples of vehicular combat games are Twisted Metal, Mario Kart, and Wipeout.
Mecha games: These are games that involve controlling or fighting giant robots or machines, often in a sci-fi or fantasy setting. Some examples of mecha games are MechWarrior, Gundam, and Zone of the Enders.
