8On the 30th January 1968, the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and the National Liberation Front (more commonly known as the Vietcong) took advantage of the ceasefire that traditionally accompanied the Vietnamese Lunar New Year ‘Tet’ celebrations to launch uprisings in dozens of cities across South Vietnam. The attacks took the South Vietnamese govemmment and their American allies completely by surprise, and many soldiers from the Army of the Republic of Viemam (ARVN) were on leave, celebrating the Tet holidays; taking advantage of what they expected
would be a period of ceasefire. Although the rebels initially appeared to be gaining the upper hand, with even the U.S. embassy in Saigon being overrun, U.S. and ARVN forces eventually rolled back the offensive, with bloody fighting in Hue, Saigon and other cities inflicting devastating losses to equipment and personnel from which the North Vietnamese forces never fully recovered.
U.S. General William Westmoreland insisted that the Tet offensive had failed, but the symbolic value of the attack far outweighed the obvious tactical defeat. Images of the offensive were beamed around the world, and shattered American public confidence that victory in Vietnam was imminent, or even possible. In the wake of the Tet offensive, President Lyndon B. Johnson reduced the aerial bombardment of North Vietnam and began withdrawing U.S. troops. Although the last American
troops did not leave Vietnam until April 1975 the Tet offensive marked the beginning of the end of large scale American intervention in the country.
