Virtuoso PC (DOSBox) - Haunted House Mission 06 - No Commentary
20No commentary playthrough of the PC version of Virtuoso. Played via DOSBox-X, normal difficulty.
Virtuoso is a 3rd person shooter developed by MovieTime and released in 1994 for DOS PCs, and in 1995 for the 3DO console. A an Atari Jaguar port was planned but never released. Takes place in 2055, where you are a rock star who doesn't like fame and crowds, and evades the world at his hotel room playing a virtual reality game.
So this is the excuse for a shooting game with random worlds, sporting all kinds of random enemies and weirdness. To be honest, it is the kind of randomness that media would display when talking about a VR gamein the 90s... and it is a bad shooting game. The objective in each level is finding a key and then heading through the exit, sounds fair enough, but when the key isn't semi-hidden god knows where, you'll be scratching your head trying to figure out what's exit... Is it a door? is that a random fence? Is it hidden behind a fake wall? o maybe is it a trap door on the ground that you can't see because the room is too small and you won't ever see it on camera?
Graphics are a weird mix of a digitized hero (you can see the blue outlines from the croma), pre-rendered 3D enemies, and scenarios with a color palette selection which ranges from acceptable, to downright horrendous. Also the view distance is terrible.
Sound was one of the selling points back in the day, with redbook audio featuring a real rock band by the name of Thai Died Suicide, which was "unsigned at the moment" according to the manual... Guess why? Well, it's not too bad, but the vocals suck.
Gameplay is slow, you move slow, you shoot slow, you turn TOO slow. This, added to the very low visibility has you playing looking at the radar 90% of the time, otherwise you won't be able to turn on time to kill enemies coming from behind, which happens all the time. Everyone online says the game is super hard and that has inevitable hazards and situations, I disagree, they didn't care to engage into the game... Which also has a bunch of gimmicky levels. On the other hand, the 3DO version is faster, has a 180º turn key, and is harder as it removes the brief invul after taking damage, but it's still doable.

Virtuoso es un shooter en 3ª persona desarrollado por MovieTime y lanzado en 1994 para PCs, y 1995 para la consola 3DO. Había una versión planeada para Atari Jaguar pero no llegó a buen puerto. Tiene lugar en 2055, eres una estrella del rock a la que no le gustan ni la fama ni las multitudes, y te refugias en tu habitación de hotel jugando a un juego de realidad virtual.
Esta es la excusa para un juego de tiros con mundos aleatorios, con todo tipo de enemigos y rarezas. La verdad, es que es el tipo de locuras que los medios enseñaban en los 90s al hablar de un juego de RV... ah, y un juego muy malo. El objetivo es encontrar la llave que nos permite abrir la salida, suena justo, pero cuando la llava no está semi escondida te estarás preguntando qué es la salida... Una puerta? una valla aleatoria? está escondida despues de una pared falsa? o tal vez es una trampilla en el suelo que no puedes ver porque la habitación es muy pequeña y la cámara no te permite verla?
Los gráficos son una mezcla rara entre el héroes digitalizado (se puede ver el azul del croma), enemigos prerrenderizados, y escenarios cuya paleta de colores va de aceptable, a simplemente horrenda. Además, la distancia de dibujado es terrible.
El sonido era uno de los puntos fuertes a la hora de venderlo, con temas en cd audio tocados por una banda de rock real llamada Thai Died Suicide, que según el manual, estaba sin sello discográfico... adivinad porqué? Bueno, no está tan mal, pero el cantante es malo.
El gameplay es lento, te mueves lento, disparas lento, giras MUY lento. Esto, junto a la poca visibilidad, te tiene mirando al radar el 90% del tiempo para poder anticiparte a los enemigos que vienen por detrás casi de seguido. Todo el mundo online dice que este juego es imposible y que tiene peligros inevitables, pero discrepo, simplemente no se han molestado en averiguar cómo evitarlos... ya que la mayoría de los niveles tienen sus triquiñuelas particulares. Por otra parte, la versión de 3DO es más rápida, tiene tecla para girar 180º y es díficil, ya que no hay la breve invulnerabilidad después de cada golpe, pero se puede terminar también.
