Viscera Cleanup Detail (PC) - Caduceus - Let's Play, Part 2
Viscera Cleanup Detail Let's Play, Episode #2
Gameplay
Viscera doesn’t have the jump scares of a horror game, or the combat action of a typical FPS. It doesn't have any RPG elements, you don’t collect glowing trophies, and there are no NPCs to interact with. What’s left is the simple work of cleaning up a horrible mess.
You get a mop, a pair of gloves, a magic mess-finding device, whimsically named “The Muck-gyver”, and a futuristic welding gun that behaves more like a proton pack from Ghostbusters. You also have access to a few stationary pieces of equipment: the water-bucket dispenser, the hazardous waste bucket dispenser, the item vendor, and, most importantly, the incinerator. You use your mop to wipe up blood and dirt, clean your mops with water buckets, use the waste buckets to collect small items, like bullet casings or errant feet, and put everything into the incinerator so that it can all be cleansed in purifying fire, then you fix each and every hole in the wall with the welding gun and punch out for the day.
The game is uncompromising when it comes to how clean you need to make everything. Your mess-finder will find every faint trace of blood, gore, or waste. Sometimes we found ourselves just spamming the mop in various directions hoping that it would make a difference. Mopping is by far the best part of the game. I know that sounds silly to say out loud, but there really isn’t anything better than seeing a huge puddle of blood turn into a nice, clean floor.
The game is a little glitchy, but it is technically early access so I can forgive it the occasional glitch. For an early access game, it’s in pretty good shape, so don’t take the presence of a few bugs lead you to believe that it’s not a reliably stable release. The little glitches are mostly the result of funky physics interactions, rather than anything sloppy with the structure of the game itself.
Bottom Line
If I were to pick a word to describe Viscera Cleanup Detail, that word would be ‘satisfying’. If I were to add a word to that, I would add ‘deeply’. The game is, really and truly, deeply satisfying. You know that feeling you get when you’ve cleaned your whole house and you get to sit down on your sofa and watch TV in a completely tidy space? This game does that, and you need to play it to experience it. Runestorm has done an excellent job of creating a complete and polished experience, and I give it my personal recommendation to anyone who played Doom clones, or anyone who just likes to give a room a good clean.
