Basically, your ship and crew need to build your ship into a titan-class warship, which will take a lot of combat and resource-gathering along the way. You also need to manage your crew, as while they increase in skill during your long journeys between systems, they'll also age, meaning they'll eventually need to be replaced with younger officers.
