War of the Worlds (Unreleased) | 1982 | Arcade Experience | Cabinet Simulation
This is my attempt to recreate the experience of playing the game War of the Worlds the way it was released, in an arcade cabinet with very beautiful art and the game being displayed on a vector monitor.
ABOUT THIS GAME
War of the Worlds is an unreleased, monochrome vector graphics arcade game created by Rob Patton of Cinematronics in 1982. It is based on the H. G. Wells 1898 novel The War of the Worlds. The game was developed as a 3D version of Space Invaders but was never put into production and fewer than ten units were made. The game is a fixed shooter using 3D vector graphics. The player controls a tank object at the bottom of the screen and shoots towards the top of the screen at descending Tripods robots in a first person perspective. The player only has movement, cannon fire, and shields to protect them from the Tripods' lasers.
ABOUT VECTOR MONITORS
In a vector display, the image is composed of drawn lines rather than a grid of glowing pixels as in raster graphics. For this reason it is impossible to accurately present what a monitor of this type is like in real life, so my attempt was to simulate a recording of this type of monitor, where trails of bright lights remain on the screen for a while before disappearing, and glows are presented where there is a large concentration of light.
