This is exactly what I would have expected a Wii version of Warioware would be like if it ever got released. It follows the same classic Warioware formula and is just the same quality as you would expect. Every Warioware game has its own unique gimmick, and this one is using the Joycons to put in physical positions on your body and then you move your body to move the character or object on the screen to complete the microgame task.
There are many different ‘poses’ to learn and when the speed picks up, it can be a little overwhelming to move into the right position to be ready for the next game to start.
There are also some games that require you to push a button whilst in a pose so this further complicates things, but it doesn’t get too complicated. There is a specific pose which I thing is genius, in which you hold the Joycon in one hand with the sensor at the bottom facing your other hand. It then maps your hand and can read what your other free hand (that isn’t holding a controller) is doing. This can be used to grab Frisbees or pretend to talk with the “talking” hand motion. It’s another great twist and I didn’t even know the Switch had this technology.
The poses themselves can be quite ridiculous. Such as putting your hands on your face in an admiration/love pose. Or the chicken pose, where you put one hand on your behind and one hand on your beak. It was a hoot doing them on my own and I imagine it would be hilarious with other people.
As if the poses aren’t silly enough, the microgames are just as crazy as ever. All of them are so silly. I won’t describe them here because the video shows clearly enough. I find them a bit harder to comprehend than other Warioware titles because sometimes you don’t understand what rules you body applies to within the pose. Sometimes you can move out of the pose which is not obvious. There are a couple which I really struggled with too, either by not making sense to me or because the controls messed up.
Regardless of some of the harder microgames, I still found this game incredibly easy and I completed it in under 2 hours. This was mainly due to the fact that you now get continues just by doing a slightly awkward pose after losing all your lives. This made it almost impossible for me to lose even if I struggled. It gave me no reason to try the level again to get practise. I was just blindly going through on my first attempt without ever having to learn from my failures. This is the first time it’s happened in a Warioware game and it really takes away any challenge.
There doesn’t seem to be much extra to do after you complete the game either. I unlocked a fitness challenge which puts the more physically active microgames together which really does tire you out but it doesn’t add anything new.
There looks like space to lock 2 or 3 more challenges, but I’m sure it won’t be enough to blow the game into something different.
They’ve even reduced training mode. Where in the past, you could play each level over and over while it gets faster and faster and you tried to beat your high score on how many you could do in a row. Now they’ve limited the game to just the 3 possible variations and then the game stops. You can choose the speed but you can’t compete for a high score. It really just is a practise mode and they’ve taken away the challenge of previous games.
One shout out I will give this game is the unique credits screen. Where you manually select the credits “level” after completing the game. The credits are written on multiple pieces of paper which you have to pull out of a box until they are all gone. This makes for the best credits of any game because 1. It is fun. 2. It can be really quick if you are quick 3. The exercise is good for you.
All in all, it’s a great game but doesn’t improve on any previous Warioware title.
