I'm Gaming Jay: Youtube gamer, let's player, retrogaming fan, and determined optimist... Join me in this series while I try out EVERY game in the book 1001 VIDEO GAMES YOU MUST PLAY BEFORE YOU DIE, before I die. The game review for each game will focus on the question of whether you MUST play this game before you die. But to be honest, the game review parts are just for fun, this series is more about the YouTube gamer journey. So let's play those classic retro games we grew up with, have fond memories of, or heard of but never got a chance to try! And with that said, the game review for today is...

WarioWare: Twisted!
Released 2004
Developer(s) Intelligent Systems, Nintendo Software Planning & Development
Platform(s) Game Boy Advance
Genre(s) Action, Puzzle, Rhythm

Jay's Thoughts
Wario Ware is a very unique series of games, insomuch as I really can't think of any other games quite like 'em. I suppose at some level, Wario Ware is simply a mini-game game, which means that the game cycles through a series of mini-games, and you win by working your way through these progressively more difficult challenges. In that way, the gameplay is somewhat reminiscent of Mario Party. However, Wario Ware takes the concept of mini-games, and spins them into a frantic and chaotic madness... let me explain.

The story behind Wario Ware: Twisted is that Wario is playing his favorite games on his Game Boy Advance when he accidentally breaks it! He takes the device to a scientist who implants a gyroscope and his Game Boy now begins to work through movement rather than pressing buttons. In actuality, the Wario Ware cartridge does contain a gyroscope, and so in a very cool "twist" you actually play this game by moving around your Game Boy! A very cool idea and something Nintendo should be applauded for.

The games themselves, as I already said, are very hectic. Many of them last less than 5 seconds, and they begin so quickly you often just feel like you're thrown into the mix. The graphics of each game too are also remarkably primitive, looking like they were drawn in MS Paint circa 1995. I suppose it's a stylistic choice but my own hunch is that since the game has dozens upon dozens of games, it might have been a practical choice (i.e., it's a lot easier to pump out dozens of mini-games if their graphics are exceptionally primitive).

All in all, Wario Ware is a fairly interesting game. I personally found the frantic pace of gameplay to be a bit too much. In a weird way though, I kind of enjoyed the craziness of the game in the way you can sometimes enjoy a cheesy movie because it's just SO cheesy that all you can do is laugh. I wouldn't say this is a must play game, but it's a very creative use of hardware, and a pretty amusing casual game if you want to try something different.

➙ Must You Play It?
Wario Ware: Twisted! is a chaotic and fast-paced mini-game game that introduces gyroscopic controls to the Game Boy Advance via some ingenious cartridge design. Though I think this game is a little too chaotic for some to enjoy, it might be worth a try if you're looking for something casual and a little silly.
