I'm Gaming Jay: Youtube gamer, let's player, retrogaming fan, and determined optimist... Join me in this series while I try out EVERY game in the book 1001 VIDEO GAMES YOU MUST PLAY BEFORE YOU DIE, before I die. The game review for each game will focus on the question of whether you MUST play this game before you die. But to be honest, the game review parts are just for fun, this series is more about the YouTube gamer journey. So let's play those classic retro games we grew up with, have fond memories of, or heard of but never got a chance to try! And with that said, the game review for today is...

Jay's Thoughts
Back when Cannon Fodder came out it generated a little bit of a controversy considering its cartoony and light-hearted take on war. Indeed, the developers wanted this game to act as a bit of a commentary on the glorification of war itself, and so those who got offended kind of missed the point (or maybe they didn't...)
Either way, beyond these more political issues, is a fun and intuitive action strategy game that really does make war "fun". In the game you command a small squad of soldiers on various missions through jungles, deserts, and arctic regions. To move, point your mouse somewhere and left click. To shoot enemy soldiers, point at them with your mouse and right click. It's a remarkably simple and intuitive control scheme yet it helps give rise to a fairly action packed game.
In addition to moving and shooting you'll need to get good at throwing grenades, shooting rockets, driving vehicles, avoid landmines, blowing up enemy bases and much, much more. Though the early levels can be passed with little forethought, you really will have to strategize in the later levels as your soldiers are extremely vulnerable and its completely common to have your whole squad taken out by a single rocket. In this way, the game really does teach you something about war: even the most valuable and skilled soldier can be lost at a moments notice. It sucks, and oddly enough, it really motivates you to try your best not to die.
All in all, this is a great little strategy game that you can pick up and play and just learn as you go. It's definitely a game I'd recommend you check out if you've never heard of it before.
➙ Must You Play It?
A simple yet action-packed strategy game, Cannon Fodder really does make war seem "fun". This is a game that's easy to pick up but difficult to master, and will eventually require you to begin to strategize and plan your attacks. A great little game and one that's worth a play!
