Was C64 disk software excessively protected and/or too reliant on the expensive 1541 only?
Who do I blame for the failure of SD2IEC to live up to the promise? The software houses writing loading routines that ONLY WORKED ON Commodore's 300 quid 1541, and not the half the price 3rd party C64 compatible disk drives like Enhancer or Oceanic drives etc by Evesham? Ultimately it was responsible for the C64 product lifespan being cut short vs expensive Amiga/ST disk only machines as who the hell bought a 280 quid 1541 in early 86 or later?? Few people who just played games in UK bought a 1541 disk drive for their £200 C64 computer!! It was tape only gaming in the mid-late 1980s on C64 for most of us in the UK (why do you think UK C64 disk games are so expensive on ebay...even the shit ones!?) so we would never see how awesome GP Circuit, Defender of the Crown, Project Firestart, Rocket Ranger Sinbad etc etc was EVEN IF we did cave in and buy a cheap third party C64 Evesham Micros disk drive. On tape those Cinemaware games on C64 are unplayable, who'd have guessed they would be awesome on C64 disk? Not me! lol
