Netflix’s ‘Wednesday’ Dance Goes Viral With The Wrong Song
The Addams family is back in vogue again, with Netflix’s Wednesday proving a major hit for the streaming giant, with no less than 341.23M hours viewed in its first week on Netflix, sparking memes and inspiring TikTok dances.
The series, starring Jenna Ortega as the titular outcast, has proved immensely popular on TikTok, thanks to a distinctively awkward, but weirdly confident dance scene performed by Ortega, which has exploded into a popular meme.
The dance (which can be seen in episode four of Wednesday), sees Wednesday flailing around on the dance floor, refusing to let her lack of coordination hold her back from expressing herself. In the series, the scene plays to “Goo Goo Muck” by The Cramps, but on TikTok, creators seemed more interested in performing Wednesday’s dance to the tune of Lady Gaga’s “Bloody Mary.”
“Bloody Mary” is, admittedly, a great song, but it doesn’t have anything to do with the Netflix series; for whatever reason, TikTokers decided the track aligned with Wednesday’s big scene, to the point where it started to overshadow the original tune.
Of course, there are still TikTokers dancing to “Goo Goo Muck,” but “Bloody Mary” has become the default track associated with the dance, even posted over the Netflix scene to replace the original song.
Speaking to NME about the dance, Ortega revealed that she’d had a surprising amount of creative control over the scene, stating:
“I choreographed that myself! I’m not a dancer and I’m sure that’s obvious. I’d gotten the song [‘Goo Goo Muck’] about a week before and I just pulled from whatever I could… it’s crazy because it was my first day with COVID so it was awful to film … I asked to redo it but we didn’t have time. I think I probably could have done it a bit better…”
Lady Gaga seemed to notice that Ortega’s big scene had amplified her song on TikTok, and was, presumably, more than happy with the free publicity. Gaga tweeted her enthusiastic support for the series, writing, “Slay Wednesday! You’re welcome at Haus of Gaga anytime (and bring Thing with you, we love paws around here ).”
