We Drove the 2024 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail for a Week and LOVED It! Megan's New Favorite?!
The 2024 Lexus GX 550 exploded onto the scene a year ago with incredible new styling and a massive upgrade in technology versus the Lexus GX 460 it replaced. This was a tall order since the Lexus GX 460 was a beloved off-road darling that had only increased in popularity over the years thanks to its indestructible V8 powertrain and incredible off-road ability (not to mention its popularity with the overlanding crowd). The Lexus GX 550 had a lot to live up to, both off the road as well as on it since the GX 550 can be had in a luxury trim with all of the styling and creature comforts someone could want in a luxury SUV that costs the better part of $100k. But it was this 2024 Lexus GX 550 Overtrail that we were most interested in as a replacement vehicle for our old Chevy Suburban. Megan loved the exterior styling of the Lexus GX 550 and the functional simplicity of the interior. (We've said it a million times that the Lexus GX 550 interior is quite nice even though it doesn't always come across in pictures and video because the overall design is quite simple and conservative.) The most surprising aspect of the Lexus GX 550 for us was how good the ride is as well as how much space there is in the cargo area because it's NOT a hybrid. Unlike the Toyota Land Cruiser that can only be had with a hybrid iForce Max powertrain, the Lexus GX 550 has a twin turbo V6 that makes slightly more power and means you get the full cargo area in the rear (assuming you don't spring for the useless third row in the luxury trim, which we would advise against). For us, the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail checks all the boxes we're interested in: the Lexus GX 550 is properly luxurious and cool looking, has actual off-road potential, and is smooth and comfortable to drive. Since we now have a Toyota Camry hybrid for family trips where luggage isn't really a concern (such as volleyball tournaments or trips to Disney), the mediocre fuel economy of the Lexus GX 550 isn't really a concern. And it IS average for the class, about 18 mpg in mixed driving during our time with the Lexus GX. Overall, the Lexus GX represents a HUGE upgrade over the previous Lexus GX 460 while retaining pretty much everything that made that model great -- minus the V8 powertrain of course. On that note, much has been said about Toyota engine reliability with the problems that have surfaced in the Toyota Tundra iForce family of engines, but most of that is overblown. Remember, the Lexus twin turbo V6 has been in the Lexus LS for years now and is assembled in Japan, exhibiting almost none of the problems the Tundra iForce engines have had. Further, the mostly German competition lags far behind Lexus in terms of reliability anyway, so what are we even complaining about? The KDSS system has also been upgraded in the new Lexus GX 550 to an e-KDSS system that gives it even better on and off-road handling characteristics, making the upgrade to the Lexus GX 550 a no-brainer. Take one for a spin; we think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
