I like to say that every game is somebody's first, and every game is somebody's favorite. Etherlords walked so other deck-building strategy games could run, making it a first in many senses. It's more likely than you think that it's touched a title you know, even if you've never heard of it! A cult classic in its own time, Etherlords left relatively little direct footprint, but its DNA exists in the background of modern games, and for that legacy, it deserves more love than it gets. Four factions with highly recognizable identities and mechanics successfully adapted from popular tabletop card games were overshadowed by flawed level design—failures that wouldn't be corrected until the sequel, but which shouldn't stop you from enjoying the original as it was meant to be.
