Firefly Studios is an independent PC games studio with around thirty full and part-time staff, specialising in strategy games since 1999.
Founders Simon Bradbury and Eric Ouellette first met in the 90s at Impressions Games, while working on Caesar. The freelance coder and producer decided to set up Firefly in 1999, hoping to successfully merge the city builder and RTS genres. Working out of a small room in south London for two years they accomplished this with the release of Stronghold in 2001, a surprise hit for publisher Take 2. Particularly successful in North America, UK and Germany, where it outsold Grand Theft Auto 3 over Christmas, critics praised the game’s unique premise, charm and playability.
Seven years and seven games later Firefly, after seeing funding disappear for their ambitious hack-and-slash RPG Dungeon Hero, decided a change was needed. Working with a skeleton team of four the developer quickly prototyped, iterated and released a closed alpha for Stronghold Kingdoms, an MMORTS that would be Firefly’s first self-published game. Over the course of the next two years Kingdoms player base grew from tens to hundreds of thousands. Now with over five million registered players and an upcoming mobile version, Kingdoms remains the most popular free-to-play strategy game on Steam. It is the reason the company is now able to operate independently and self-publish its games.
Today Firefly remains independent, making strategy games for long-time fans and castle lovers everywhere. The company plans to stay as small and nimble as possible, continuing to make unique historical strategy games for as long as their fans will let them!
Current projects include Stronghold Kingdoms (iOS/Android), Stronghold 2: Steam Edition, MetaMorph: Dungeon Creatures and the next entry in the Stronghold series.
