At the time of his greatest success many critics felt that Wesley Willis was being exploited by the record label and that people were laughing at him instead of with him…I get where they are coming from because he was frequently mistaken for being destitute and homeless but I also think that they just didn’t get or like his music and let the word “schizophrenia” get in the way…
Because from the interviews it seems that Willis knew what he was doing, loved it, found the singing and attention therapeutic and was also happy with the cash he was making.
He was just an artist making a living and trying to work through what must have been incredibly tough experiences.
