Simulation Within A Simulation Theory
Ok so the Simulation within a simulation theory is something that has existed since the shows first season.
Way back when Dolores was still enjoying the world full of splendour an apparent insider on the show leaked the entire plot to the reddit.
They said that in Westworld that nobody is human and that everything is actually taking place with a three step A.I. pyramid that demonstrates heirachies within society and how the upper levels ultimately treat the ones below with disdain.
The lower part were not aware of their existence as machines and these were the hosts. The next part up were the humans that we’ve encountered such as William and Logan. They were aware of hosts but did not believe that they were machines themselves.
At the top of the pyramid is the level that has complete self awareness and control over all of those below.
This would be your Seracs, Fords and people at the pinnacle.
Though it was disregarded in later seasons, the theory once more picked up steam with the release of Season 3 episode one.
This is because during a scene, a party guest named Roderick stated that there would be a lot of irony if the world was just a simulation inside of a simulation. Though a lot of people thought this was just the creative team poking fun at the audience, it’s still something that a lot of viewers, including myself, can’t get our of our heads.
This line was intentionally put in the episode to draw attention to this possibility and whether it’s a clue to the truth of the show or simply diversion, it does cause a lot of speculation.
The Poster
Now firstly, the poster for Westworld Season 3 could indicate that there indeed exists a false world that has been pulled over everyone’s eyes.
It shows a desert wasteland with a machine hunched over infront of a decimated city.
Everything is in ruins and it’s a completely different world to the one that we have seen in the show thus far.
There is no hint of war and civilisation seems to be at it’s height.
So why choose this for the poster when it hasn’t appeared in the season at all thus far?
Either they are spoiling what’s to come in the finale or they are infact showing us the true world and how it really exists.
It is possible that because of the destruction we saw Serac witness first hand in Paris that he decided to create a simulation similar to the matrix which people could live in instead of the real world.
Here they would be safe from the terrors of the real world and they would be able to live in a world full of splendour.
Sorry, force of habit.
Serac clearly has access to VR technology as we see him use it on a gangster to show them their family’s future. Dolores used this in episode one and there is a lot of horrifying potential with the tech.
The gang member writhes in horror at the visions he recieves and if Serac can invoke this emotion with just a pair of glasses, imagine what he could do with the proper equipment?
We already know that he has facilities that specialise in vitural reality and that takes us to our next point, Maeve.
