What Happened to Resistance: Fall of Man?
When PlayStation unveiled their initial offerings for their revamped Playstation Plus, there were some classic titles on the list with some interesting inclusions and even more interesting omissions. One omission that seemed strange to me was the lack of Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. This wouldn’t be weird if it wasn’t for the inclusion of Resistance 3 on the list, which leaves the questions, why leave these two games off the list and are we getting a new Resistance game?
There are plenty of reasons why it makes sense, including PlayStation’s lack of an exclusive shooter franchise, which might not have been a big deal before Microsoft acquired Zenimax and Activision, possibly gating Sony away from blockbuster shooter franchises like Call of Duty, Overwatch, Doom and Wolfenstein but it certainly seems that a lack of exclusive shooters is a much bigger deal now.
PlayStation has also publicly said they want to have 10 new live service games by 2026, and with shooters and battle passes going hand in hand, this lines up well for live service.
Finally, PlayStation loves to remake their content including the Demon’s Souls PS5 remake, all of the different Uncharted Collections, or even the heavily speculated Last of Us remake, which would be the second time after it was already remade for the PS4.
A Resistance collection that includes the first two games in the series make sense as technologically there have been massive changes since 2006 when the first game was released.
The two reasons you would do a remake would be for the initial sales if the games popularity meant that it would likely sell well again and the other reason is to get more people interested in the series so that when wholly new game gets released there are more potential buyers. Resistance makes sense to me as it checks both of these boxes.
The Resident Evil series comes to mind with their fantastic remakes of RE2 and RE3 that without a doubt helped RE8 sell over 3 million copies in just four days and over 6 million copies in its first year.
Resistance was more than just another run of the mill shooter with a interesting alternate timeline, insomniac weaponry and hopefully we can see it return.
