At the very beginning of the series, Naruto is shown having a rough go of it. Unable to pass the test to become a Genin for the upteenth time, Naruto looks as though he feels like giving up. That’s when the first real act of treason is brought up to him. Of course, Naruto doesn’t recognize it as such, because he was told it would probably be okay, and that it might actually help his ninja career. And honestly it should have. The fact Naruto could even get this scroll at all means one of two things. Either Naruto, before he even becomes Genin, is 10X more sneaky than even the best of Anbu, or that Hiruzen really REALLY sucks at guarding scrolls with top secret info in them. Anyway, Naruto steals it, and Mizuki begins to tell Naruto everything about his connection to the Demon Fox, and how it results in Naruto being outcast from the village. He proceeds to tell him that now that he’s done this, Mizuki can get away with the scroll, and nobody will be able to blame anyone but Naruto. Iruka at this point tells Naruto he needs to escape and not let Mizuki get the scroll. Naruto makes another choice though. Instead of running away, he stays behind to protect Iruka from Mizuki, as he’s the only person who has ever loved Naruto, despite their troubled past. But what if Naruto HAD listened to Iruka? Well, we’re here to figure that out. Strap in and get them headbands on, because it’s story time.
