Compromise. This has been a theme so far in this story if you haven’t noticed. The idea that you could or should change your beliefs just because someone is your friend. Naruto and Konan are both feeling this right now. And while I think there should be some tolerance to a point, you shouldn’t change who you are just because a friend tells you to. If there is something you know is right, it’s your obligation to do it, even if your friend disagrees. And the same is true for the reverse. If your friend is trying to make you do something you know is wrong, you shouldn’t do it. This form of compromise is often called “Peer Pressure”, in that you’re pressured to change your beliefs to fit what someone else believes, even if you know it's wrong. And the longer you drift this way, eventually you’ll turn around and realize that you’re nowhere near the shore. Who you are and where you started, the purity in your ideals, all of it is beyond the endless horizon of compromise. Sometimes the hardest thing a person can do is stand up for themselves. We have to stay true to ourselves. Maybe our code isn’t what everyone else believes, and because of that, we won’t stand against them in an aggressive way. But we also won’t stand down and let our beliefs be trampled on. We are merely supposed to stand up. Stand up for what we believe, stand up for ourselves. Uncompromising on the issues we find important. There’s an old saying that in any such argument, there is a “Hill you will die on”. This phrase means that there is a certain belief you hold that you’ll never give up on or compromise on, regardless of what consequences your friends and those around you may impose on you. This is a trait known as Integrity. Sometimes you’ll suffer for these beliefs. Your friends may disregard you, others may despise you. But if they are so willing to drop you because you won’t compromise your moral code, were they ever truly friends in the first place? It’s important to me not only to entertain you, but to see how our viewers grow. We’re all shinobi in this world, and each one of us has a nindo we have to follow. The world is a depressing place, as Nagato often views it as. But if we keep our inner Yahiko alive, our inner Naruto, we can change this world for the better. And maybe, just maybe, one day we’ll find peace.
